the Paris marathon

Stunning day - hot already at 9.45 a.m.
Police boats patrol, helicopters overhead. Tension mounts. And you can see I'm ready with my camera.

The first wheelchair athletes speed past,
then the police cars, and there they
are at 9.59,
the elite gods of running,
seven Africans in a pack, all leg and bone.
I was shooting into the sun, clapping and
trembling. They went
by so fast - running since 8.45 a.m.,
this is their 25th
kilometre. Unbelievable.
